This programme is a 100% application-driven experience. Participants step into the role of a Business Architect on a simulated digital transformation project, working through discovery, design, and delivery phases using NHS Digital standards, TOGAF® Business Architecture, and BIZBOK® methods.

Practical Learning Objectives
Lead a business architecture discovery workshop effectively.
Create L1–L3 capability maps that define business scope.
Model value streams that show how patient, staff, or partner value flows.
Conduct a gap and impact analysis using current-state vs. future-state artefacts.
Develop and present a blueprint and roadmap linked to strategic drivers.
Demonstrate your work in an interview or stakeholder boardroom setting.
Programme Breakdown: The 6-Week Project (8 Sessions)
Goal: Understand the problem and define the architecture brief.
Activities
- Review the case background and project charter
- Identify strategic goals, drivers, and outcomes
- Facilitate a mock stakeholder interview (role-play exercise)
- Document business goals using a VMOST canvas
- Define scope and target audience
Deliverables
- VMOST Canvas (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategy, Tactics)
- Stakeholder Map
Goal: Build a real Capability Map (L1–L3) using tools and technologies
Activities
- Run a capability discovery session from functional requirements
- Use naming conventions and grouping logic
- Identify overlaps, gaps, and ownerships
- Apply maturity and importance ratings
- Visualise results in Miro or Excel
Deliverables
- L1–L3 Capability Map
- Capability Maturity Matrix (RAG heatmap)
Outcome: Participants can explain how capabilities define the “what” of the business.
Goal: Show how value is delivered across key processes
Activities
- Map the end-to-end customer/patient journey
- Identify trigger events, value stages, and stakeholders
- Link value stages to enabling capabilities
- Define key outcomes and measures
Deliverables
- Value Stream Diagram/Maps
- Value-to-Capability Cross-Mapping Sheet
Outcome: You can clearly articulate how capabilities create value.
Goal: Visualise the future-state design
Activities
- Capture current-state capability view
- Identify gaps, risks, and dependencies
- Define the Target Business Architecture Blueprint
- Link required changes to enablers (people, process, technology, data)
Deliverables
- Current & Target Business Architecture Blueprint
- Gap Analysis Table
Outcome: You can demonstrate how architecture supports transformation.
Goal: Create a transformation roadmap
Activities
- Translate gaps into improvement initiatives
- Group initiatives by theme, priority, and release
- Visualise short-, medium-, and long-term milestones
- Create a Capability Roadmap and link to objectives/outcomes
Deliverables
- Transformation Roadmap (Gantt / Kanban format)
- Initiative Backlog (Excel)
Outcome: You can define a phased delivery journey backed by architecture.
Goal: Present your work and defend it like a Business Architect
Activities
- Present your final blueprint and roadmap to a review panel (mock stakeholders)
- Answer executive questions
- Receive feedback on clarity, confidence, and alignment
- Peer-review other presentations
